DALHOUSIE ALL-INCLUSIVE WOMENS' NETWORK (dawn)

Give us an overview of your society

The Dalhousie All-Inclusive Women’s Network (DAWN) was founded with the goal of fostering an inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment for women and gender-diverse individuals at Dalhousie University. Our society works to address gender-based challenges and advocate for equality through events, programming, and community-building initiatives. From networking events to workshops, DAWN creates space for individuals to develop personally and professionally, while also addressing systemic issues within society that affect women and marginalized groups.

What is your society's social issue focus and in what ways have you been involved?

DAWN focuses on improving the quality of life for female and gender-diverse individuals by tackling issues such as gender inequality, representation in leadership, and accessibility. Our involvement ranges from hosting educational events, advocacy campaigns, and support networks to collaborating with other organizations to amplify voices and raise awareness about these critical social issues.

How do you feel student involvement in these social issues can impact change?

Student involvement plays a crucial role in shaping the future of social issues. By actively engaging with these topics, students can bring fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and collective action to the forefront. We believe that through grassroots organizing, raising awareness, and creating actionable platforms, student-led initiatives like DAWN can amplify marginalized voices and contribute to meaningful social change both within our university and in the broader community.

Why is female representation so important in every boardroom?

Female representation in every boardroom is vital to ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered in decision-making processes. Women bring unique experiences and viewpoints, and their involvement at the leadership table leads to more inclusive and effective decision-making. Gender-diverse representation challenges traditional power structures, promotes equity, and serves as an inspiration for future generations to see themselves in leadership roles, breaking down barriers that have historically limited access to these spaces.

Favourite female business icon and why?

One of our favourite female business icons is Indra Nooyi, former CEO of PepsiCo. Her leadership has been revolutionary in redefining corporate responsibility, focusing on sustainable practices, and prioritizing diversity. Nooyi’s ability to navigate a highly competitive corporate world while maintaining a commitment to innovation and people-centered leadership is a powerful example of the impact women can have in business.

Biggest self-advocacy tip:

Our biggest self-advocacy tip is to always be clear about your value and speak confidently about your contributions. Know your worth, and don’t be afraid to advocate for your ideas, achievements, and opportunities. It’s essential to set boundaries, be persistent, and understand that your voice matters in all spaces, especially when it comes to your growth and well-being.

Motto to remember: “Empowered women empower women.”

This motto reminds us that by supporting each other and advocating for inclusivity, we can create a ripple effect of empowerment that extends beyond our own experiences and impacts the larger community.
