To end off this year's Women's History Month, NCWIB has partnered with 5 student groups across the entire country in order to highlight their achievements and work to promote women in their respective fields!
Schwarz women in business

The Schwartz Women in Business Society was founded in 2010 at St. Francis Xavier University. We host various skill building and networking events throughout the year, such as socials, panels, and workshops. We also proudly organize The Largest Undergraduate Women in Business Conference in Atlantic Canada. As the most active business society on campus, we constantly strive to create experiences which enable all members to feel represented within our organization. We have grown significantly since 2010, having been recognized by The Students Union as Society of The Year in 2013, 2014, and 2017. Schwartz Women in Business recognizes diversity as a catalyst in organizational success and helps position business students to develop into business leaders.
What is your society's social issue focus and in what ways have you been involved?
We focus on prompting not only equality but gender equity within the business school. In a male dominated field, we want to be heard and seen equally. Our networking events for our members encourage confidence, creativity, and leadership that they can bring back to the classroom and in the future, their place of work. Our mission for the Schwartz Women in Business Society is to always be involved in prompting gender equity vocally and openly on campus to show that women’s voices matter in a place of business.
How do you feel student involvement in these social issues can impact change?
Without our members, we wouldn’t have the current activism on campus that we do today through hosting events, partnering with other societies, and posting on social media. It is important that we continue to show the value of our creativity and leadership openly, alongside campaigning that women need to be treated equally in this space, it is most important to demonstrate what we bring to the table. With over 200 members, there are women all over campus advocating for female voices in the business world.
What has been your society's impact on your campus/in your community?

We have extended our membership opportunities to all faculties, so those who are not in the business program can learn and develop their skills. All our events involve skill development and networking opportunities to prepare our members to advocate for themselves when they reach the workforce. We cultivate a safe and welcoming environment within the Schwartz Women in Business Society in efforts to recruit as many members as we can. Our goal is to positively impact their time at Gerald Schwartz School of Business.
Why is female representation so important in every boardroom?
Women have very different lived experiences than men. It creates more evolved perspectives and opens the door to expanding existing ideas when women are involved in decision making. Having more women in boardrooms offers a variety of input, creativity, and more relatable ideologies or concepts that will do nothing but benefit everyone in the room. Women belong in the boardroom, especially at the head of the table.
Favourite female business icon and why?
Michelle Obama is authentically herself and does not shy away from a problem. As a strong successful attorney to the First Lady, she advocated for reversing childhood obesity, supported military families, and fought for international young girl’s education while she was in office. She is our icon because she continues to use her education, social platform and leadership to voice important issues and help those who need it the most. She is the perfect role for young leaders like us!
